A Taste of Israel’s Wine

L’chaim!

Shatour, a specialist in bespoke Israel experiences for the discerning traveler, is experienced in planning wine journeys that will surprise your tastebuds and expand your knowledge of the history of this region.

Israel may not yet have the reputation of Burgundy or California, but it’s fast making a name for itself in the world of wine. Its Mediterranean location and incredible range of microclimates produce an exceptional terroir. Grapes are grown throughout the country thanks to the rich, marl and hard dolomite-layered limestone soils enriched with various nutrients such as marine sediments and basalt deposits from historic lava flows.

No surprise then that people have been making wine here for thousands of years. Today, the country boasts hundreds of wineries, beautiful vineyards and award-winning wines – for example, vintages from Tura Winery which won the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2023.

Here we present just a few of our favorite destinations – these and many more can be included in your tailor-made itinerary.

Psagot Winery

In the mountains of Jerusalem, Psagot produces 25 types of boutique Kosher wine from grapes grown in chalky terraces at 700-900 meters ASL. Their grounds also feature a cave where Hasmonean artifacts dating back to 70 BC were found. Try their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon SV, a wine with dark berry, blackcurrant and vanilla aromas and an earthy, velvety texture – it was awarded 90 points by Decanter Magazine.

Tishbi Winery

Nestled in the historic town of Zichron Ya’akov, Tishbi Winery doesn’t just offer great wines and delicious food—it offers a journey through time. With roots dating back to the 19th century, Tishbi masterfully combines rich heritage with modern winemaking techniques. When it comes to wine tasting, Tishbi provides a unique experience: while most wineries serve their wines with cheese and bread, Tishbi pairs them with exquisite chocolates from the renowned French brand VALRHONA, making it an enjoyable experience for families with children as well.

Tura Winery

Located in Samaria, 20 square kilometers of vineyards in rocky terra rossa soil at 850 ASL produce full-bodied, rich wines with intense aroma and accentuated fruit flavors. Try Mountain Peak 2020 – aged 22 months in French oak barrels, this well-balanced vintage won a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2023.
